All the power of a Ryzen 9 7950X at a TDP of 55W?

AMD unveiled the Dragon Range, its new family of mobile processors, at CEX earlier this year, and the Ryzen 9 7945HX is one of the most impressive examples. It’s based on a Zen 4 chiplet and the 16 cores/32 threads run at 2.5GHz base, 5.4GHz boost, yet it’s advertised as having a 55W+ TDP, featuring an integrated AMD 610M GPU with RDNA2 technology. To test how effective this chip is, KitGuru tested an Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 G733PY 2023 gaming laptop in a variety of CPU tests.

The CPU itself drew less than 100W in their tests, yet outperformed Intel’s 12th generation mobile components in many tests. There are even a few gaming tests where it outperforms the i9-12900K, although to be fair, that has a lot more to do with the RTX 4090 than the Ryzen 9 7945HX. AMD’s claimed power supply is certainly accurate, with a Vcore of 1.2V to 1.3V drawing less than the desktop equivalent, yet still managing to deliver similar performance.

If you’re looking for a laptop production software that runs on a powerful CPU, a Ryzen 9 7945HX based laptop will give you that performance while consuming power comparatively.
