The CEO of Arrowhead Games, developer of Heldivers 2, captured a controversial opinion on nowhere else but X (formerly Twitter), saying that Nvidia’s DLSS is “nice technology, but not necessary.”
The lack of branded upgrade tools Helldivers 2 it’s surprising, especially given the fact that the title quickly became “one of the most fun co-op games” of the year, as you can read in Helldivers 2 review. Gratefully, Helldivers 2 no DLSS needed.
So hard… not to be baited… 🤣
OK, I’ll bite the bullet: DLSS – nice technology, but not necessary. If I have code time, I prefer to put it to good use by focusing on the core gameplay, as it is the most important to a successful game.
This way of thinking seems to have paid off.

The game uses its own Temporal Super Resolution (TSR), which offers either upscaling or oversampling depending on the power of your GPU. You can read more about how it works in our Helldivers 2 PC performance guide, but the game is impressively stable overall. Despite the matchmaking issues, the title’s performance has been solid since launch. This is true even with entry-level cards like the RTX 3060, where we were able to achieve over 60 frames per second (fps) at 1080p with all settings maxed out.
According to Johan PilestedtCEO of Arrowhead Games, upgrading tools like DLSS and FSR wouldn’t help much in Helldivers 2 due to the fact that “most of the performance load is on the CPU since we’re simulating everything.” While the upgrade might not drastically improve performance, framerate features like DLSS 3 and FSR 3 could break the CPU bottleneck.
Looks like that could be on the horizon. Pilestedt hasn’t said whether DLSS or FSR is coming Heldivers 2, but in response to X, the developer agreed that both FSR 3 and DLSS should be added at the same time, if at all. For now, that doesn’t seem to be one of Arrowhead’s priorities: “I love DLSS and other performance-enhancing technologies. But when you’re in a prio meeting and it’s ‘more awesome content’ versus ‘more technology’, the decision is easy.” Pilestedt wrote in X.
With coupling issues in Helldivers 2 mostly in the rearview mirror, it’s easy to appreciate how well the game runs on a variety of systems. Unlike a title like Starfield, This is a game that doesn’t need to rely on upscaling and framerate technology to achieve consistent performance. This is good news for PC gamers worried about developers relying too much on upscaling technology to achieve playable performance.
Options aren’t a bad thing though, so hopefully we see DLSS and FSR as additional settings in the Helldivers 2 long ago Given the massive popularity of the game, it makes sense to have as many PC features available to players as possible — even if they aren’t absolutely necessary.
